Napanook 1998

Napanook, a historic vineyard that dates back to 1836, is located at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains in Yountville, Napa Valley.

The Napanook wine was first released in 1996 with the intention of producing a wine to be enjoyed in its younger years.

1998 was an “el Niño” vintage. Because of this natural phenomenon, the climate all around the earth was atypical and the Napa Valley had to face particulary cool weather.

This year, Cabernet Franc was excluded from the final blend. It would have produced a big structure that does not suit the wines intended to be consumed young.

Vintage Summary
1998 was a viticulturist’s year; very challenging in all aspects. The very heavy rainfall from November 1997 through May 1998, combined with a rather cool spring, caused an extremely long blooming period and a very late harvest. Persistent and severe crop thinning allowed the remaining grapes to reach their full maturity during the unexpectedly warm month of September.
